Gallery: Igualada Cemetery in Catalonia by Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos
Description: Cemetery design rarely makes the news in the architectural press, but the extraordinary cemetery created in a former quarry at Igualada (60km from Barcelona) in Catalonia by Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos, makes a profound statement about death and landscape. It was opened in 1994 and is at one level a sunken earthwork, combining rusting steel features, a processional street which leads down into the depths of the small quarry, lind on both sides with tombs, at the bottom of which is a small clearing/orchard where the sun shines dazzlingly. This is a separate world of the dead - their own village or underground city of caves so to speak - but it is an integral part of the tough, rocky landscape of the region.
